It took a team effort to rescue a Devola man from the base of a steep embankment where police say he crashed his ATV.

The accident happened before dusk outside Devola, just north of State Route 821.

Twenty-six year old Jason Rowe, a Marine mechanic visiting home after training in Florida, was riding with a friend on a wooded trail near Broughton Field when he lost control rounding an unfamiliar curve.

His riding partner says Rowe went over a steep embankment into a creek bed, possibly breaking his leg.

"It was just hilly terrain.. just a bunch of ups and downs...just your basic riding terrain," explains Jake Balcosky. "He was coming back, we were not use to it, and miscalculated the turn and went down over a large embankment. I was following."

A volunteer fire department rescue team could not carry Rowe out due to the steep muddy terrain, so the helicopter had to fly into the brush to extract him.

Rowe was flown to Morgantown because Columbus and Charleston hospitals were full with emergency cases.
