Officially...it's being called an earthquake. But some people felt it...and some didn't...and it only shook the Southern Ohio region for a few seconds.

Phyllis Sword was reminded of a mild earthquake nearly two decades earlier...which could be felt in Mason and Gallia Counties.

"In May of 1989, we had one here," Sword recalls. "But, until this morning, it had slipped my mind. I was in the bathroom, and the bottles on my shelf began moving."

The US Geological Survey says a 3.4 magnitude quake which struck Friday morning was centered three miles underground, near Oak Hill, Ohio. The manager of the Oak Hill Foodland store was in his upstairs office when it hit.

"It was just like a big boom," said Tony Hutchinson. "It didn't shake anything off. It was just a big noise. We felt it upstairs, but down here, it didn't hurt anything."

While the epicenter of the quake was in Jackson County, much of it was felt south of there, in Gallia County, by people like the students at the University of Rio Grande.

"Everyone felt it, too," said student Travis Stout. "I heard it was felt in Athens."

And people near Columbus said they felt it, too, although Jackson County authorities said they had few, if any calls from residents. That wasn't the case in nearby Gallia County, where nearly 200 calls were logged.
