Winfield, WV. (AP) -- Putnam County Commissioners have nixed the idea of allowing electronic billboards along a busy highway intersection out of safety concerns.

The Putnam County Commission approved a recommendation by the county's planning commission to deny Lamar Advertising's request to change a county zoning ordinance.

The Kenova advertising firm wanted to put digital billboards along U.S. Route 35 near the Interstate 64 interchange.

David Powell of the Planning Commission said Tuesday that Lamar's request would cause too much of a distraction to drivers.

County commissioners said they would like to see more studies on how dangerous changing electronic signs are to drivers.

Commissioner Gary Tillis said allowing electronic billboards could bring in additional revenue.
