A statewide smoking ban is one of the measures which was approved by Ohio voters Tuesday...one which will change smokers' habits when they go out to dinner or on the town.
"Smoking's not good for you. We all know that.", said one voter we spoke to Monday.
At least 58% of Ohioans who voted Tuesday thought so. They approved the more restrictive of two anti-smoking measures on the ballot.
Enforcing the ban, which goes into effect in 30 days, is likely to be up to the type of agency which now enforces a number of local smoking bans...local health departments.
"That is something that, as the rules are written, local health departments will have to work on with the Ohio Department of Health," says Washington County Health Commissioner Dr. Kathleen Meckstroth. "There will certainly be a public comment period on those rules, and they will be drafted as to how best to enforce those rules."
Some restaurants are already ahead of the new ban. Late this past summer, marietta's bob evans restaurant enacted a smoking ban. And a number of local communities and counties around Ohio also have smoking bans.
"It certainly may expand some of those local rules," Dr. Meckstroth says, "and some of those rules may not go as far as the state ban."
Besides Washington County, there are two other health departments serving the cities of Marietta and Belpre.
Dr. Meckstroth says those departments will likely have the duty of enforcing the state law in those cities.
