Morgantown, W.Va. (AP) -- The mayor of Bruceton Mills knew her town was violating the law by opening its polls for only two hours Tuesday, but Lisa Loughry says there was no choice.

The Preston County town -- population 74 -- didn't have enough volunteers to staff the polls from 6:30 a.m. To 7:30 p.m. as required, so it staffed them from 5 to 7 p.m.

It was either that, Loughry says, or hold no election. State law prohibits poll workers from being related to candidates or office holders, and that ruled out most volunteers.

Loughry says 21 of 30 registered voters participated in uncontested elections for mayor and town council.

And while the results may not be legal, no one has complained.

Loughry didn't run this year, so she says she may be able to work the polls next time.
