A Marietta man is in a Columbus hospital with burns after an explosion in his house Monday morning.

It happened around 11:00 on Cisler Drive in Marietta.

The Marietta Fire Department says residents of the home rigged a hot water heater from a propane tank.

Fire officials suspect there was a gas leak in the system.

They are not positive what triggered the explosion but say it could have been something as small flipping a light switch.

Fire officials hope this serves as a reminder to the public that a system like this should always be left to the experts to install.

"If you were in a regular system that has what they call a thermocouple on it, the pilot light would have gone off and the gas would have been flowing freely, that thermocouple was designed to cut the gas off where in this case, there was a definite leak and gas built up," said Chief Tom Dempsey, Marietta Fire Department.

The explosion blew out windows and knocked part of the home off of the foundation.

Neighbors say Rick Huddleston was injured in the blast.

He is being evaluated right now at the Ohio State University Medical Center.

Chief Dempsey says no one will be cited because this happened in a private residence.
