Lewisburg, W.Va. (AP) -- A rabid raccoon shot by a Frankford man is Greenbrier County's 38th confirmed rabies case this year.

The county has been battling an unusually high number of rabies cases that have taken a toll on pets as well as wild animals.

At least three dogs and one cat have been euthanized after encounters with rabid animals, while two dozen domestic animals that were current on rabies vaccinations were given booster shots and placed on 45-day quarantines.

A U.S. Department of Agriculture rabies vaccine drop last month was distributed in the western end of the county, not in the area where most of the cases have occurred.
