Dupont is investigating an early morning release of a substance from the Washington Works plant.

The substance, called fluorinated ethylene propylene, was discharged after a rupture of a relief line shortly after four Wednesday morning.

Some of the fine, white powder spilled into the Ohio River, and late this morning, part of it could be seen as far south as the Belleville locks and dam.

"We sent crews, cleaning up that material from the locks and dam," says Robin Ollis, External Affairs Manager. "We don't have any information that it's gone any further than that dam."

The accident forced the shutdown at the plant unit where the product comes from, but Ollis says it's been "business as usual" throughout the rest of the complex.
