While the Marietta City Schools bond issue and levy has been getting the most attention, both Belpre and Frontier's school districts have renewal issues on ballots in those areas.

Belpre's renews a 3.85 mill levy, which, if approved, would take affect next year.

Frontier is seeking renewal of a 3.3 mill levy, which it emphasizes is for current expenses.

Another issue on ballots in western Washington County is local options. In some belpre precincts, two Speedway stores are seeking approval of beer sales, an issue rejected two years ago.

A Napoli's restaurant is seeking to sell beer, wine and mixed beverages. in the past, local options have been soundly rejected in Belpre, long a "dry" community.

Local options for the sale of beer and wine at a convienence store are on the ballot in the Little Hocking area.

The cities of Marietta and Belpre are also electing city councils and some city officials. Former Belpre Mayor Bill McAfee is the lone candidate for city treasurer, and he is running as a write-in. The terms of both cities' mayors run until the end of 2011.

Boards of education will also field candidates in Washington County's six school districts.

However the Frontier school board is considered uncontested...since there are three candidates for the three open seats...and only one candidate to fill an unexpired term for another seat.
