City leaders in Parkersburg and Vienna say they aren't affected as much by pension funding issues as other West Virginia cities.
The Legislature is considering in special session this week...a proposal to help restructure police and fire pension programs suffering from massive funding shortfalls...including the cities of Huntington and Charleston.
"We watch it on a yearly basis; we use the state of West Virginia to audit Vienna," Mayor David Nohe says, regarding Vienna's employee pensions. "Looking into the future, we're solvent, but there could always come a day when it becomes too expensive for any municipality."
Carl Sizemore of the Parkersburg Fire Department, serves on the state firefighters association board.
He says that while the city is interested in what kind of bill the legislature aprroves, the city's pensions are better funded than those of other municipalities.
