"The most wonderful time of the year" doesn't just apply to the Christmas shopping season. People who come to stores like Cain's Outdoors in Boaz are celebrating a different kind of holiday.
"I deer hunt, bow hunt, everything," said one hunter from Newport, Ohio. "It's my favorite time."
West Virginia's deer season is two weeks long, and starts the week of Thanksgiving. Ohio's deer season is just one week, and begins the week after Thanksgiving. But what the two have in common, is that they both bring out hunting enthusiasts.
"You see a lot of people picking things out and saying, 'this is my Christmas present'," says store owner Scott Cain. "They get it a little early, but they get to use it now instead of waiting until next year."
We often think of hunting season as happening the last two weeks of November. But, in terms of other types of prey, it begins during the fall and runs into winter.
"Ohio is very busy with muzzleloading, so we get a lot of guys doing that," Cain says. Then, West Virginia's muzzleloading season comes in. Then you have Christmas, so we have more Christmas traffic. Then, in January, Ohio has their late muzzleloading season. So it carries through into January."
Cain adds that, in spite of the economy, deer season is always a popular time of year...either for recreation, or for food to feed hunters' families.
