Seasonal affective disorder is a disorder that goes along with this time of year. The symptoms are similar to those of depression.

David Schaffer , a clinical social worker with the Counseling and Wellness Center in Parkersburg, said he suffers from the disorder and that the easiest way to treat it is to get outdoor sunlight as much as possible.

Schaffer doesn't make it outside all the time so he uses a tool called a light box to simulate sunlight.

Schaffer said when using the light box you have to place yourself a few inches away and let it shine on your face, but you don't want to look directly into it.

Schaffer said he uses the machine for about 20-30 minutes each day.

"I encourage people to talk to a doctor to make sure their isn't some other reason that they're depressed before they rush out and buy a light box to treat themselves, "said Schaffer.

A light boxes cost about $150 dollars.

Experts say seasonal affective disorder can also be treated through counseling and antidepressants as well.
