We have a very important message for you from the Putnam Community Water Association, which serves parts of Devola.
Water samples collected earlier this week showed nitrate levels above the nitrate standard, or maximum contaminant level. The levels registered at 10.55 mg/L. The maximum contaminant level is 10mg/L.
Nitrate in drinking water is a serious health concern for infants less than six months old.
You should not give this water to infants, or use it to make juice or formula.
Symptoms of consumption of nitrate in infants include shortness of breath and blue baby syndrome.
If these symptoms occur, ou should seek medical attention immediately.
Also, do not boil the water.
Children older than six months and adults can drink the tap water.
However, if you are pregnant, nursing or have other health concerns, you should consult your physician.
Nitrate from drinking water can come from natural, industrial or agricultural sources, including septic systems and run-off.
Levels of nitrate in water can vary throughout the year. The Putnam Community Water Association is investigating and taking the necessary steps to correct the problem as soon as possible.
