More than half of Ohioans who die in automobile crashes every year were not wearing a seat belt at the time.

And the Ohio Department of Public Safety says 75% of vehicle occupants who were totally ejected during a car crash are killed.

And national statistics say seatbelt use rates drop at night....when fatality rates increase.

"Sometimes the officer doesn't see if the driver has it on; it's too dark," says Sgt. Todd McDonald of the Ohio Highway Patrol's Marietta Post. "If there's any doubt, we don't give you a citation for it."

Ohio is one of the states nationwide participating in the national "Click It or Ticket" campaign, now in effect until June 4th.

It's geared toward the Memorial Day weekend, with law enforcement officers on the watch for motorists not obeying seat belt laws.
