Police aren't saying much about the alleged plot to commit a shooting at Ravenswood Middle School or about the 15-year-old student arrested Friday. They are saying the investigation began with a series of rumors which began about six weeks ago.

At that time, rumors began circulating that the shooting could happen on the last day of classes for the year in Jackson County...which is Wednesday.

"As these rumors circulated, our school officials, in cooperation with law enforcement, were able to run down each of these rumors," said Jackson County Superintendent of Schools Blaine Hess. "At the end of last week, some additional information had become available, and allowed law enforcement to take some action."

Although it didn't specify a shooting was about to take place, police say it was the student's "MySpace" account which led authorities to him.

"We were able to talk to students," said Tom Speece, the school's Prevention Resource Officer, "and were able to get some information by sending subpoenas to MySpace, and were able to get enough information to make an arrest."

The juvenile is now begin held on $250,000 bond, and is charged with felony terrorist acts. And the probe may not end with that individual.

"He is now in lockdown at a detention center," said police chief William Sinnett. "We are looking at one more person of interest, and hopefully, by the end of the week, we'll make another arrest."

It was talking to students, parents and staff in the weeks after the initial rumors, that convinced police the threat was more than just a rumor.

"It's not what could have happened, but what could have happened in this situation, if we didn't intervene," Speece says. "Obviously, we have to be a lot more pro-active, and we have to listen to the students, and listen to our staff, and make sure we get as much information as we can, because we have to act on every bit of information that we have."

The heightened state of alert at Ravenswood Middle School is expected to contune until Wednesday, when classes end for the year.

There is not, however, expected to be a lockdown while school is in session.

Ravenswood Police ask that, if you have any information on the case, call the police department at (304) 273-3500.
