Beckley, W.Va. (AP) -- A Beckley teenager accused of shooting a Mountain State University basketball player is in custody.

Beckley police Capt. Jeff Shumate says 18-year-old Martrell Laviece Mitchell turned himself in on Saturday.

Mitchell was being held Monday at the Southern Regional Jail on $500,000 bond.

He is charged with attempted first-degree murder and several other counts.

Police say Mitchell shot 22-year-old Alvin Mitchell early Thursday outside a residence that houses members of the Mountain State basketball team.

The two aren't related.

Police Sgt. David Allard says the shooting occurred after a verbal altercation at a convenience store.

Alvin Mitchell was shot multiple times.

His condition wasn't immediately available Monday.
