Motorists might soon start to see a new kind of vehicle when it comes to law enforcement.

Already in the valley, some police agencies have made the switch and Tuesday, a local sheriff agency introduced a new fleet.

The car is a Dodge Charger. Tuesday morning, the Washington County Sheriff's Department introduced six new Chargers into its fleet.

The change stems from not only wear and tear, but also safety concerns.

Officers say the Dodge Chargers are becoming a popular police car choice, because of the safety features included in the vehicle.

The chargers are replacing Ford Crown Victorias.

Major John Winstanley says he has some concerns with the Crown Victorias. "Ford, over the last 10 years, we found they have an explosion problem when they're hit in rear-end crashes. There's a potential for them to explode and then catch fire, somewhat similar to what happened in the Gallipolis area."

In Gallipolis, two Ohio Highway Patrol officers were killed in a fiery crash after their vehicle was rear-ended.

Officials say the Chargers are also more economical. The Charger includes many safety features the Crown Victoria did not.

When adding in all the extra features, Winstanley says the Chargers are actually about $500 dollars less.

Yes, Crown Victorias (and their Mercury Marquis cousins) have been known to explode upon high-speed rear impact. And last year's fatal crash involving two Ohio State Troopers and a woman in another vehicle is one example. But that is largely because (a) these cars are rear-wheel drive which means they have a large trans-axle housing which can puncture fuel tanks in high-speed rear-end collisions and (b) there is a dis-proportionately high number of Fords being used as police cars, because they handle so well at high speeds. Ford has taken some steps to reduce the likelihood of explosions in high speed rear-end collisions. But as long as police cars park along highways so that officers can investigate accidents or issue citations, they and their passengers will always be sitting ducks for these kinds of mishaps.
