Command Sgt. Maj. Phillip Yates Ret., 72, of Little Hocking, Ohio passed away May 6, 2008 at Marietta Memorial Hospital.
He was born Jan. 1, 1936 at Chadburn, N.C., a son of the late Dottie and Pauline King Yates. Phillip retired as a Command Sergeant Major from the U.S. Army after 32 years, having served in the Korean War, two tours in Vietnam and numerous other military assignments. After his military service, he retired in 2001 from the IRS – Department of Treasury. Phillip was a Scottish Rite Mason, belonged to the Belpre Lions Club and the Bethel AME Church, Parkersburg.
He is survived by his wife, Bessie Cabbil Yates; one son, Phillip Yates Jr. and his wife, Amanda, of Bowie, Md.; one step-son, David W. Cabbil of Parkersburg, W.Va.; two step-daughters, Brenda J. Cabbil and Christina Cabbil, both of Parkersburg, W.Va.; five grandchildren; one sister, Sylvia Yates Lewis and her husband, Fred, of Claymont, Del.; two nieces; and numerous other family and friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Dottie Yates Jr.
Funeral services will be 1;00 p.m. Saturday, May 10, 2008 at Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, 400 Green St., Parkersburg, W.Va., with the Rev. Perline Ware officiating. Interment will follow in the Evergreen North Cemetery with full military rites by the American Legion Post 15. Visitation will be from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
