(AP) - West Virginia University's Pat McAfee is giving up his dream of being a two-sport athlete.

The football player is retiring from soccer after just two months of training and practice.

He was looking forward to the soccer team's April 5 spring opener, but says he doesn't want to get hurt and miss his final year of football.

McAfee made his decision after attending WVU's Pro Day to watch his former football teammates perform for NFL scouts. He met Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin, talked to a few scouts and realized he could improve his draft stock as both a kicker and punter if he were to focus on football.

Football coach Bill Stewart says he would have supported McAfee's decision either way.
