Parkersburg rolled out the red carpet on Friday for ESPN and their Titletown segment. Thousands packed Stadium Field at PHS as part of the day-long celebration of athletic success. Fans from PHS, South and Catholic all came in support of their respective teams and the city as a whole, as they looked to make their claim of the Titletown moniker.

The gates opened at 4:00, but fans were out tailgaiting hours before hand. Once inside, all the championship teams were recognized and the cheerleaders, dancers and band members all provided the entertainment leading up to the taping of the Titletown segment. A hang-glider kicked off the festivities as he landed right at mid-field next to the stage.

Wendy Nix of ESPN interviewed former PHS player, coach and A.D.. Mike Hayden, who also coached at Parkersburg South. They segment in it's entirety will air on Sportcenter next Tuesday at 6:00. Then everyone get log on to ESPN.com and vote for their city the following day.

WTAP wants to know how you felt about the festivities! Make sure to leave a comment with a name, and we may use it on the air!

Also make sure to send your Titletown pictures to anthony.lima@wtap.com!!

Congrats to Parkersburg. I've always looked at it this way though, getting to regionals in Ohio in any sports is like winning a title in Parkersburg. It's much tougher in Ohio.

Is this a football discussion or a Titletown discussion? The Ohio poeople only want to talk about football. If Parkersburg only excelled at football, they would have never been nominated. It is every winning program from each school and all the people that support them. It is not called Football town. I know Parkersburg's wrestling programs have been ranked nationally numerous times and there is no Ohio vs. WV argument you can make about that. I remember our Crew team at PHS used to compete against colleges and clean their clocks. Stop talking about football and talk about the winning tradition of a town.

Parkersburg is TITLETOWN USA !! GO PHS !!!

Posted by: Mark Location: Marietta on Jul 21, 2008 at 05:14 PM
Well Lincoln, I remember us going into Parkersburg 30 years ago in front of 11,000 and destroying you guys 21-3. You got a state title that year, we went 6-3 and got nothing. Sure doesn't seem fair.

Parkersburg deserves everything they receive. Local Buckeyes are just jealous that they could never be a Big Red, Patriot or even a Crusader...QUIT BEING HATERS!!!!!

I'm an Ohio fan who's excited for Parkersburg's exposure. However, we in Belpre and other Washington communities just wish someone would aknowledge that just b/c we don't win state titles (nearly impossible in this region in this state), that we are just as good in many sports. We went up and ended Williamstown's amazing win streak, yet they contend for a state title and get every game on the tv, but we get nothing, despite making the playoffs in Ohio. It's just not an equal playing field, and people in WV have to understand that.

This would be a nice honor, if it was deserved. Titles like this should be given to places that hold athletes to some sort of academic standard. The school system here is a joke. The athletes suffer at the hands of fans who would rather see an award like this won, rather than see these kids receive a good education.

IF YOU FOLKS OVER IN OHIO ARE SO PROUD OF YOUR SCHOOLS ACCOMPLISHMENTS, WHY DIDN'T ONE OF YOUR DEVOTED FANS WHO PACK YOUR STADIUMS FOR AWARD WINNING ATHLETIC TEAMS WRITE IN TO NOMINATE YOUR VERY OWN? THE FUNNY THING I'M SURE THESE POST WERE WRITTEN BY A PARENT TRYING TO LIVE THEIR DREAMS THROUGH THEIR CHILD. WE WONDER WHY THE WORLD IS AN UGLY PLACE AND PEOPLE SO MEAN AND JEALOUS AND HATEFUL, VERY SAD!

Congratulations to the entire city for their support! Now let's all vote at ESPN.COM for our hometown!

I thought the atmosphere brought in was incredible and I thought it was crazy how many people showed up for two reasons(1. One of the main days of the fair was going on and 2. It was EXTREMELY hot

Posted by: Dave Location: Vienna on Jul 20, 2008 at 05:24 PM
Why is it every time something good happens in WV theres some jealous person in Ohio trying to cut it down? Just be happy for an area city just once.

Posted by: Jensen Location: Devola on Jul 20, 2008 at 10:59 AM
Nobody is saying you guys don't suppport your teams, we're saying that you should try to compete on this side of the river. Belpre would have been playing for a title in WV this year in class A, but let's see Williamstown play in Ohio and see how many titles they'd play for.

To Anderson in Waterford: for as warm as it was I think the turnout was pretty good, and if it wasn't so hot I bet those stand would have been filled on both sides. You might try attending a PHS vs South football or basketball game, most of the time the games are packed stands. You should watch the ESPN classic showing of the 2006 PHS vs South football next Tuesday, July 22 @ 2:00pm nad you'll see how much Parkersburg supports their high school sports. Can you pack Staduim Field for a football game?

Waterford is titletown

Congrats to Parkersburg, who couldn't even fill their stands for ESPN. You guys have what, 100 schools in your state? If you were in Ohio, you'd have exactly zero state titles, not 192 or however many you guys claim.
