(AP) - The upcoming bye week couldn't come at a better time for the Pittsburgh Steelers, who are down to their fourth-string tailback and have injuries at more than a half-dozen other positions.
Pittsburgh found a way beat Jacksonville 26-21 on Sunday. That was despite backups in at tailback, two spots each on the offensive and defensive lines, their starting fullback not active and a banged-up first-team cornerback. Even the kicker wasn't healthy.
Defensive linemen Chris Hoke and Travis Kirschke have proven capable of filling in for Casey Hampton and Brett Keisel. The two were part of the regular five- or six-man rotation along the three-man line to start the season, but have been forced to stay on the field longer with two starters out.
On the offensive line, Darnell Stapleton made his first career start Sunday after right guard Kendall Simmons was placed on injured reserve with an Achilles injury. Marvel Smith left the win over the Jaguars with a groin injury.
With Willie Parker, Rashard Mendenhall and Carey Davis all unavailable Sunday, the Steelers turned to third-down back Mewelde Moore. Moore rushed for 99 yards and caught three passes for 17 yards.
