Reptile Refuge Opens In Parkersburg Save Email Print

Parkersburg, WV (AP) -- They may not be as cute and cuddly as puppies and kittens, but snakes and other cold-blooded critters need love too.

That's the philosophy behind Scaled Skins Inc., a reptile and amphibian refuge that opened in Parkersburg three weeks ago.

The refuge's operators, Matthew Hahn and Michael Kerns, are working with the Humane Society of Parkersburg. The humane society can't accept reptiles and amphibians at its shelter, and as a result, officials often must euthanize these animals.

Scaled Skins also will take other animals, depending on the circumstances.

Adoption fees help cover the cost of maintaining and feeding the animals.

Hahn says he and Kerns hope to receive state and federal grants. The refuge also accepts donations.

Scaled Skins is located at 1327 Broadway Ave next to the Broadway Barber Shop. Its phone number is 485-4040.

I encourage everyone to stop in and visit Scaled Skinz, it is wonderful. My son and I stopped in today and I am happy to announce I have a new addition to my family. She is an albino king snake and is very, very lovable. I do understand that some people may not like these types of animals but just remember they are God's creatures too, and they do need love and cared for just as your dogs, cats, and children do. The owners are well educated and very polite. Please stop in and help them do what needs to be done. Any donation will be greatly appreciated by these guys.

I spent the day at scaled skinz playing with the animals. They are hand tamed by the owners and are very freindly. This is a great place to get the little critters you want. The owners are very nice people who care alot about the animals they rescue. I think that everyone needs to visit this shelter atleast once to check it out. IT'S A GREAT PLACE TO SEE!!!!!!!!

As one of the few who locally rehabs box turtles (a nearly endangered animal) and releases them, I hope this business is successful. Personally I think that the local pet stores have been very irresponsible in offering pets such as baby alligators, boas, etc., knowing full well that they grow up to be huge and once people can't care for them anymore they are usually set free. I remember reading not too long ago about a 4' gator in one of our local state park lakes. I wish this company the best of luck and success!
