Different frequencies will have different properties of propagation and reception. It isn't possible to guarentee that everyone who used to watch channel 15 will also be able to see the new digital 15.1 THAT'S why WTAP is urging people to get converter boxes installed NOW, rather than wait and discover that you also need a new UHF shaped antenna either on your set top or atop an outdoor antenna mast! Don't wait. Order your discount coupon NOW!
Look. WTAP has no choice in the matter. the FCC has ORDERED that they switch to other frequencies. All they can do is keep running tests so that YOU can be prepared. If you need help, contact Shadix TV. They are experts at this reception. If your "new set" is failing the test, that means the cable that is being supplied to you is passing the ANALOG signal right now. If the cable company promises you'll be ready by Feb. 17th, do you trust them? What will you do Feb. 18th if they fail? If I were you, I'd order one of those FCC Discount coupons and get at least ONE coverter box wired into your house so that you KNOW one of your TVs will be working in February 2009!
I have a flat screen HDTV and a 13" "traditional" tv. Neither of my tv's worked during the test. How am I supposed to go buy a new tv when the one I have is the newest tv on the market? What is wrong with our signal? It can't be the cable running to our home (if this even matters) because we just purchased our home and time-warner installed new cable from the pole all the way to our televisions. I'm really confused.... any ideas?
the digital test was annnoying. I had my Hdtv on the analog station so i could watch wtap because the digital staion does not come in all the time. I guess when it switches over in feb. I will only be able to watch athens because they have a stronger signal in marietta.
We also have cable tv on our sets and when this test took place we failed. We also did not have reception. After calling our cable company they have assured me that a converter box is not necessary and we will be in Feb. 2009. Hope that this is true.
Thanks for the reply Dave!!
Neither of our TVs 'passed the test', either. We have both Time-Warner cable for local channels and DirecTV for all other viewing. I DID call Time-Warner cable and was assured there would be no problem with DTV. If this is true, why are our TVs 'flunking' the test? I just don't get it.
For older TV's you are going to need a converter box and a good OUTSIDE antenna if you live outside the P-burg area. Digital signals do not travel as well because they are on UHF frequencies. You might also need an antenna booster for cable runs of more than 50 feet - OR - have a splitter to run two or more tv's. There are no such thing as digital antennas - just antennas that receive UHF freq's better than older VHF-UHF models. Rabbit ear antennas will only work if you live on a large hill with a clear line of sight towards the transmitting tower. WTAP should be making this more clear to their viewers.
Am glad to report that all 4 TV's worked during the test on WTAP @ 5:00. Thanks!
I HAVE DONE THE LAST TWO TESTS FOR THE DIGITAL READINESS AND HAVE FAILED BOTH TIMES I HAVE CONTACTED TIME WARNER AND THEY ASSURE ME THAT ALL WILL BE READY WHEN THE TIME COMES I SURE HOPE SO
We have cable, a box and when you turn on the test, we get the warning message no picture. I thought if you were on the cable nothing needed to be done.
ALL TV SETS SOLD IN THE USA FOR THE PAST TWO YEARS MUST BY LAW BE DIGITAL COMPATIBLE. THIS MEANS, YES, YOU CAN BUY A NEW SET FOR XMAS AND BE ASSURED THAT YOU WILL RECEIVE DIGITAL FREQUENCIES...IF A STRONG ENOUGH TV SIGNAL IS PRESENT. IF YOU HAVE A BOX BUT CAN'T SEE A SIGNAL FROM A TV STATION YOU USED TO WATCH, BUY A NEW ANTENNA AND POINT IT AT THE BROADCAST TOWER.
if you subscribe to cable or satellite, you won't need the box. Only if you receive channels through an antenna.
Melissa, I would buy a converter box because it should work with any TV, even if you chose to upgrade to a bigger TV later.
we have the box and we can play tv but when you turn the signel on no pitcure. What could be wrong?
