The best advice for driving in bad winter weather is not to drive at all.
Authorities say try and wait until snow plows and sanding trucks have had a chance to do their work.

But, if you do brave the roadways here's what you need to know.
According to Curtis Richards at the Department of Highways in Wood County, if you start to slide out the best thing to do is not touch your brakes. Take your foot off the gas so you can get back in control.

Not slamming on your breaks might go against your gut instinct,
but Richards says it's actually better to pump your breaks instead.

If you have ABS, or any other anti-lock braking system, it's recommended to apply a steady pressure on the brake and don't let up on it.

Also, he says, turn into your skid.

There are also a couple of things you can do before the snow strikes.
The National Safety Council says to make sure that you and your vehicle are prepared by winterizing your car.

That includes checking the tires for air, antifreeze levels and the freeze line. Andrew Florence, Manager of Midas Auto Service in Parkersburg, says it does make a difference in extreme conditions you could be looking at a freeze situation. It can actually crack the engine and you could be looking at replacing it.
