Want to live to 100?

Take some tips from a real centenarian.

John Lisk introduces us in today's Health minute.

Most of us have the capacity to live to a ripe old age, but Louis Charpentier has actually done it.

"Well I don't feel any different than when I was fifty, I guess."

He was fifty…

Fifty years ago.

Louis is now a centenarian.

He takes almost no medications…

And suffers from no chronic illness.

"I never did anything special. I keep working every day. That's very important for me."

Giving him a sense of purpose as he creates detailed carvings in his workshop.

But Louis actually has done something pretty special; he's worked hard to keep up a healthy lifestyle.

"I think about 70 percent of getting to even your late eighties, almost early 90s is your behaviors. And only 20 to 30 percent would be your genes."

So begin, like louis, by eating well and maintaining a healthy weight...

Exercise regularly, including strength training...

Learn to manage stress...

And don't smoke .

"If you smoke you can take 15 to 20 years off your life."

And follow Louis' lead by also staying socially connected. Friends and family joined him to celebrate his 100th birthday.

"If I keep on going like I am now a hundred and one is nothing."

For today's Health Minute, I'm John Lisk.
