A summer thunderstorm developed over Athens county Tuesday afternoon and quickly intensified into severe conditions.

The storm lengthened, running north and south from Washington County to Meigs County, and rolled east at 30 mph.

Reports of penny sized hail from the Washington County line near Vincent-Barlow and trees downed along Rte. 339 started pouring in.

Dark clouds rolled into Belpre & Little Hocking & Marietta just before the storm broke there.

Bulletins from the National Weather Service were relayed by WTAP and live reports on the storm appeared just before and after the top of the hour at 4 p.m.

Many power lines and trees are down in the area.

American Electric Power reports 524 customers in Washington County and 406 in Athens County are without service in the wake of the storm.

If you see a downed power line, do not touch it. Call your local power company to report it as soon as possible. Call AEP at 1-800-277-2177.

Stay tuned to WTAP for further updates and news reports tonight.
