Campaign Eyesores
It’s campaign season once again, time for some (but not all) candidates to plaster their signs all over state rights-of-way and private property with no regard for taste. I draw your attention to Parkersburg Memorial Gardens, the cemetery behind the football stadium at Parkersburg High School, that used to be known as the Odd Fellows Cemetery. Over the past couple of weeks, signs have begun sprouting there faster than dandelions after a rain storm. A couple of these were placed with the permission of the cemetery, a decision I question but which is something that the owner of a piece of private property is welcome to do. But those few signs have led some other candidates, without the good manners to ask permission or the restraint to keep from desecrating a burial place, to plant their signs all over the hillside along Murdoch Avenue. Who can blame them? It is, after all, one of the most highly traveled streets in Parkersburg. But in addition to it being dis-tasteful, most of those signs are there illegally. That’s because a large portion of the land there is the state’s right-of-way. The state has better things to do, I’m sure, than collecting signs that are placed on its rights-of-way. And the candidates are not always to blame for where an over-zealous supporter might choose to place a sign. But I urge all candidates, who see their signs on state property OR stuck in the ground at a cemetery, to go out of their way to remove them. And I would urge all voters who see candidates’ signs in locations such as these, to feel free to vote AGAINST those candidates, in the effort to teach SOMEONE a lesson.

These signs drive me crazy! They really tell you nothing about that persons ideas and thoughts on what they plan to do once voted in. /but more than I hate those signs I hate Yard sale signs everytime I see one I want to rip it down and throw it in their yard.I hate that people post them and don't take the time to take them down when their sale is done.they are all over the place!

Maybe if every candidate agreed to a "Green Campaign". No yard signs, only WTAP advertising. Roger, maybe a few meet the candidates sponsored by WTAP for the general elections might be highly rated. I can not tell you how many people count on the League of Women's Voters Guide to make their pick. Certainly it is important, but answers of under 50 words to complex problems?!? WTAP could do a really great job at a similar meet the candidates. Keep up the good work!

The only thing worse than campaign signs at cemeteries and scenic spots is when they block drivers' vision at intersections. Does anybody really decide how to vote based on these stupid signs? As you suggest, Roger, a vote AGAINST sign polluters might be appropriate. It's a silly, costly and unnecessary practice.

Right on Roger, Right of way signs are like tulips, they just start popping up at the first sign of spring.
