MARIETTA, Ohio (WTAP) - The Boys & Girls Club of Washington County will be participating in a Youth Town Hall, which will be held virtually on April 12 at 4 P.M.

Six area youths, including a teen from Washington County, have been selected to pose questions to local lawmakers. The theme of the event will be “Safer Childhoods”, and the youths will have the opportunity to talk with lawmakers about their experiences with the Boys & Girls Club, and the ways in which their local clubs work to create safer childhoods for children and teens in Ohio.

The event is being organized by the Ohio Alliance of the Boys & Girls Clubs, and the goal is to bring together youth from around the area to participate in the summit.

Participating panelists will include State Representative Willis Blackshear, Jr., State Senator Stephanie Kunze, President and CEO of Innovation Ohio Desiree Tims, and Executive Director of the Ohio Alliance of the Boys & Girls Clubs Adam Shank.

“I as an adult can preach all day long about the great stuff that we’re doing here...But what is really impactful is when a youth says, ‘Hey, my staff, my Boys & Girls Club, my safe space, they did this for me and it made me feel like I belonged there,’” said Jenna Stewart, Resource Development Manager and Belpre Site Director for the Boys & GIrls Club of washington County. “And it’s so much more empowering when a youth confirms that everything you’ve been working toward has actually happened. That you’ve succeeded in creating that safe space and building those connections and mentoring that youth,” she added.

While only the participating youths will have the opportunity to speak directly with the panelists, members of the public are invited to register to watch the town hall. Registration can be done online here.
