Parkersburg resident receives Truman scholarship
PARKERSBURG, W.Va. (WTAP) - Of the 62 Truman scholars of this year, one of them is a West Virginia University junior from Parkersburg.
Abby smith is a Parkersburg High School alum and currently boasts a 3.92 GPA.
The Truman scholarship is something that goes to those with academic ability, communication skills and service both on campus and in the community. As well as being a part of public service in some form.
Smith is a political sciences major that is looking to be in public service and wants to help the mountain state.
“I would like to help West Virginia grow whether that means staying here or going somewhere else and being able to make sure that federal government work is pointed towards West Virginia. That’s really what I want to do. Whether it’s in-state work or out-of-state work that’s directed at West Virginia both can be extremely beneficial in growing the state,” says Smith.
Smith is a junior in her second year at West Virginia University after having already attended WVU-Parkersburg while in high school.
She believes that helping the state in providing better public education and job diversity is one of many ways to help the state she is from.
