PARKERSBURG, W.Va. (WTAP) - Congressman Steve Stivers won’t run for Senate in 2022.

The Republican representative from Ohio said in an interview Tuesday that he was on a new path and would not be running for the Senate seat Rob Portman will leave behind in 2022.

Instead, Stivers will leave Congress behind all together to become the President and CEO of the Ohio Chamber of Commerce.

The congressman announced he would leave the House for that position on Monday, but Tuesday he clarified he would not run for Senate in 2022.

He said his new position in the Ohio Chamber will allow him to still shape public policy while being closer to home.

“Well, I wasn’t looking for a job, but the Ohio Chamber came looking for me,” said Stivers. “They were doing a search and called and after I talked to them it seemed like an interesting opportunity to stay involved in public policy but actually be based in Columbus where my young children and my wife live.”

Stivers will vacate his seat officially on May 16. His district includes parts of southern Columbus, as well as Athens and Wilmington.
