Parkersburg Art Center hosting selfie mural contest
PARKERSBURG, W.Va. (WTAP) - The Parkersburg Art Center (PAC) is hosting a contest for area artists who would like to submit designs for a mural to be used as a selfie station. The mural will be painted on the side wall of the Unity Cafe facing Juliana St., and is intended as a downtown beautification project.
The theme of the mural will be “unity”, and artists are asked to include that word somewhere in their designs.
“It’s about what unity in our community looks like to you,” said Jessie Siefert, PACr’s managing director.
All artists age 16 and older are invited to submit their designs. The winning artist will win a $500 prize and will be asked to paint their design on the wall, with the help of others in the community who would like to participate.
Digital images of designs may be submitted to firstname.lastname@example.org before May 31. PAC is looking for a complete mockup of what the design will look like on the building.
The cafe plans to cover the cost of supplies to be used in painting the mural.
Siefert said the project and other beautification campaigns are intended to help revitalize downtown Parkersburg.
“We’ve seen that, in a lot of other cities, public art really starts to bring people back into their downtowns,” Siefert said. “It brings color and life to buildings that have started to show a little wear and tear. We’re all working together to bring energy back to downtown Parkersburg,” she added.
