MOV’s Got Talent: Luna Spears
PARKERSBURG, W.Va. (WTAP) -
Sophomore Luna Spears would describe herself as easy-going, kind, and adventurous.
Spears started drawing at the age of three and say she has three bookshelves filled with sketchbooks she’s kept over the years.
“I drew a lot when I was young and from there just kind of, it became like a comfort thing for me and I would just go and draw when I was anxious. It just latched on and I got better and better at it”
Luna said she likes to draw a little bit of everything, and she gets her inspiration from the pictures she takes on her camera.
“I just like drawing pictures I’ve taken a lot because I’ve traveled a lot. My dad was in the army, so I was born in Germany and just moved all over. I just have all kinds of pictures that are sentimental to me.”
To Spears, drawing leads her to an outlet for creativity but also as a stress relief. She says it makes her feel more confident and connected with herself.
“I started getting really anxious in middle school and that’s when I was like also kind of dove into art more so. That’s kind of when I realized, ‘hey I can use this to calm down’ and then from there, I’d just get more stressed with harder classes and stuff, and then worked up to bigger pieces with more stress.”
Spears also credits her art teacher, Abbie Burge, who continues to challenge Spears every day in the classroom. Burge also mentioned that Spears will be taking AP Studio Art during her junior and senior years of high school, which is almost unheard of.
“She’s helped me boost into like, feeling better about my art because she’s put me in these harder classes and I feel more challenged with it than just ‘oh ok I’m drawing’, but now I’m like I have to try to draw and it’s kind of made it more fun.”
Luna sees herself continuing to draw in the future, and will still continue to draw whether art becomes a full-time career or not. “I think it’s shown me what all I can do more than like just thinking ‘oh hey I’d be cool if I could do this’, but it’s showing me that I actually can do this. It’s like made the options of what I can do bigger and kind of just expanded what I think I can do.”
