PARKERSBURG, W.Va. (WTAP) - A math teacher at Parkersburg South High School has been named Wood County Schools 2022 Teacher of the Year.

Her name is Sara Klesel and she has been teaching at South for 10 years.

Klesel was recognized during Tuesday night’s Wood County Board of Education Meeting. A spokesman for the school board read aloud her nomination, which was submitted by a parent of one of her current students. It said in part: “I am lucky that I can be home with my children to assist them if they need anything, so I see what is happening in my children’s classes. I can say for sure Ms. Klesel is going above and beyond. She would be an excellent choice for teacher of the year.”

Over 300 people were originally nominated to be teacher of the year. Klesel said she’s honored to win after a difficult year.

“So many teachers, I’ve watched them go above and beyond this year. With all the changes, learning new skills, learning new ways to engage their students, it’s just, it’s been quite a year. So, to end this way, in a year where we’ve been stretched to the limits. It’s just extra special,” said Klesel.

Superintendent Will Hosaflook said as part of her award, Klesel would receive $500 from his office to buy classroom supplies.

Klesel will now represent Wood County in the state teacher of the year competition.
