American Red Cross hosting swimming classes at Southwood Pool
PARKERSBURG, W.Va. (WTAP) - The American Red Cross of the Ohio River Valley, with sponsorship from the YMCA, is holding free swimming classes at the pool at Southwood Park this summer.
The classes are for swimmers at all levels, and children must be at least five years old and have completed kindergarten.
The sign-up will be on Saturday, June 5 at Southwood Park Pool. Children’s classes will be held July 12 - 23 in the mornings. Those unable to attend the sign-up in person may call (304) 488-5279 beginning June 7 to be put on the waitlist. Callers should leave their name, address, and children’s names and ages, said Sharon Kesselring, executive director of the American Red Cross of the Ohio River Valley.
There will be three children’s classes held daily, two at the beginner level and one more advanced.
Adult classes will be held on the same dates at 7 P.M., with no pre-registration requirement. Teens may participate but will be required to bring a parent or guardian to confirm that they have permission to take the class.
The number of swimmers allowed in each class will depend upon COVID-19 protocols at the time. The lessons often teach around 200-300 children per summer, as well as the additional adults.
