CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WTAP) - Gov. JIm Justice has called a special session of the West Virginia Legislature, to decide the spending of recently-granted American Rescue Plan money.

The special session will start next Monday at noon, while lawmakers are in town for interim meetings.

The governor is also asking legislators to determine the spending of expected budget surpluses, for the fiscal year ending June 30.

The governor’s recommendation: use the money for highway paving projects.

”I am requesting that they commit $15 million of the surplus we’re going to have this year to highways,” Justice said Thursday.

The projects will be separate from those for which money is set aside from the Roads to Progress bond issue funds.

West Virginia is on track to have a $430 million surplus this year.
