PARKERSBURG, W.Va. (WTAP) - Parkersburg South took time before their student versus faculty game to honor their recently deceased long-time girls basketball coach.

The patriots took time this afternoon to give coach Scott Stephens the sixth-ever Patriot Award.

He becomes the first and only recipient to receive this award posthumously, as his wife, Linda, and mother, Betty, took this honor for him.

Stephens was a girls basketball coach for 13 years at the school, where much of the PSHS community speaks glowingly of his impact and what he means to the school.

“It’s more than just coaching and basketball and girls basketball. He’s been a role model for students, not only that he’s had as a coach but here at the school. He’s been a godly influence on the whole school as staff and as students. So, just the amount of impact on the court and off,” says student council advisor, Jaime Moss.

The Patriot Award recipient is voted on by the students.
