PARKERSBURG, W.Va. (WTAP) - Thursday’s Wood County Commission meeting was the first of the month and to mark the start of March, two proclamations were read.

One of which recognized March as Red Cross month.

Sharon Kesselring was present to provide statistics on how the Red Cross served our area last year.

She says that in 2021, the Red Cross responded to 34 disasters in Wood County, serving about 100 people, and that the Red Cross provided 977 training classes, such as CPR and First Aid.

But Kesselring says this work cannot be done without volunteer support... something she says they are experiencing a shortage of...

According to Todd Wines, “it takes six people to run the shelter for 24 hours and... we really (only) have enough to run, you know, for one day, two days max. So, we’re really looking for volunteers that could help out locally.” He says “if anybody would like to sign up, they can go to and click on Volunteer and the application process takes about 10 to 15 minutes”

In addition to volunteering, Kesselring says one of the best ways to give to the Red Cross is by donating blood.

She says that 2,400 units of blood were donated last year in Wood County alone.

With COVID restrictions easing, Kesselring says she hopes the Red Cross is able to go back into area high schools for blood donations in the fall.
