Hello, my name is Phyllis Smith. I started at WTAP in the summer of 2015. I grew up in Vienna and graduated from Parkersburg High School. I went to West Virginia Wesleyan College in Buckhannon. I have a bachelor's degree in Communication Studies and a minor in English. While I was at Wesleyan, I interned at WDTV in Bridgeport. I learned the ropes at WDTV and met some of my closest friends there. I was hired as a weekend reporter while I was still in college. I worked at WDTV for about 2 years.

Some of the biggest stories I covered at WDTV were a train derailment in Randolph County, the Elk River water crisis in Kanawha County, and when a man shot and killed four people in Clarksburg. Two of the people shot were innocent bystanders. They were a father and son team that were delivering newspapers early in the morning. The most intense story I covered at WTAP was the IEI warehouse fire. That fire burned for over a week and could be seen from miles away.

It was always my hope that I could come back home and work at WTAP. Being the 6 and 11 p.m. anchor is a dream come true for me.
