1 dead, 2 injured in two-vehicle crash in Washington County

New Matamoras, Ohio (WTAP) - The Marietta Patrol Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol is currently investigating a two vehicle fatal crash that occurred on State Route 260 near milepost 1 on June 12, 2019 at approximately 10:09 P.M.

A preliminary investigation revealed a 2001 Chevrolet Silverado, driven by Joseph Barnes, age 25, of New Matamoras, Ohio was westbound on State Route 260.

A 2005 Chevrolet Malibu was eastbound on State Route 260, driven by Robert Ryan, age 87, of Graysville, Ohio. The vehicle driven by Barnes traveled left of center and struck the vehicle driven by Mr. Ryan head on.

Barnes was transported to Marietta Memorial Hospital for serious injuries. Ryan succumbed to his injuries sustained as a result of the crash and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

A passenger in Ryan’s vehicle, Donald G. Hendershot, age 57, of New Matamoras, Ohio, sustained serious injuries and was flown from the scene by Med Flight.

Matamoras Fire Department, Grandview Township Volunteer Fire Department, Newport EMS, Shea Towing, Washington County Sheriff’s Office, and Washington County Prosecutor’s Office assisted at the scene.

State Route 260 was closed for approximately 5 hours.

Alcohol appears to be a factor. The crash remains under investigation by the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
