Airport manager: increase in first-time business

WOOD COUNTY, W.Va.-(WTAP) People who haven't flown from the Mid-Ohio Valley Regional Airport are now booking flights out of the area.

That's according to Airport Manager Glen Kelly, who cites the increase in commercial flights since Contour Airlines began service in late 2018.

Contour has daily flights to Charlotte, North Carolina, with a weekly flight to Tampa, Florida. It recently announced the addition of a second flight to Tampa.

The airline also now connects to American Airlines flights from Charlotte, something that's good news for a member of the airport's board of directors.

"I'm going to fly to Charlotte, and book my own tickets out of Charlotte on American to go to Sarasota (Florida), board member and Wood County Commissioner Bob Tebay told us recently. "It's a great thing that we're going to be able to code share out of Wood County."

An $8 million runway improvement project is set to begin next spring.

Kelly adds takeoffs and landings of commercial and private aircraft from the airport are about the same as they were a year ago.

Last year, the airport was the second busiest in West Virginia for general air traffic.
