PARKERSBURG, W.Va. (WTAP) - The American Legion continued a tradition of disposing of old glory.
Flags no longer needed by their former owners were disposed of in a formal ceremony Friday afternoon, at Post 15.
According to the legion's own guidelines, they are presented to the first and second vice-commander, and then to the post commander, who directs the color guard to burn them.
They say there are two ways to conduct the ceremony.
“One is to burn under the direction of the commander, or somebody of authority, to say that these flags have been worn to the point where they can no longer be used, or you can separate the stars from the stripes and dispose of them that way,” said Neil Dowler of Post 15.
Flags in bad condition can be left at American Legion posts, including Post 15 in the traffic circle at any time.
