PARKERSBURG. W.Va. (WTAP) - UPDATE 10/7/19:
Sign-ups for the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree toy program began Monday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will run through Friday October 11th on the same schedule, with an additional sign-up opportunity on Tuesday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Major Carey Richmond says that the Salvation Army saw roughly 25 families before noon on Monday, but they expect to see around 280 families sign up for assistance in total. She says she suspects the rain kept a few parents away on Monday morning.
Information regarding what is needed for signing up can be found in the original story below.
It may still be September, but Christmas is less than one hundred days away and the Salvation Army of Parkersburg is gearing up for its Angel Tree program.
Angel Tree provides toys and other gifts to children 12 or younger in families who qualify. Wood County families looking for assistance this Christmas can sign up at the Salvation Army facility on 5th Street in Parkersburg between from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Oct. 7 through 11. Sign-ups will also be from 5 to 7 p.m. on Oct. 8.
On average, Major Carey Richmond said about 360 families are served by the Salvation Army in Wood County during Christmas. That’s more that 800 children.
“When it’s between a Christmas gift for their child and their rent for that month, we want to help lessen that burden,"Richmond said. "And so if we can help them with the Christmas gifts then maybe they allocate more of their funds to what they need.”
Several items are needed to sign up for Angel Tree assistance, including a state issued photo ID or driver’s license; a rental agreement and/or a rent receipt with address; a utility bill from the the current month; official proof of all income; official birth certificates for all children; and clothing sizes and a list of hobbies for children. Guardianship and custody papers are also needed, if applicable.
The Salvation Army will be releasing the locations of Angel Trees at a later day for anyone who is interested in donating to a non-identified child. Bulk donations will also be accepted at the Salvation Army facility on 5th Street in Parkersburg.
Richmond said donated items should be new and geared toward children up to 12 years old.
