Annual Shamrock Classic 5K raises money for vacations for cancer patients

MARIETTA, Ohio (WTAP) - Hundreds of runners kick off St. Patrick's festivities by raising money to fight cancer.

Over 300 runners participated in the 38th Shamrock Classic 5K run and walk in Marietta Saturday morning.

The event is organized by Dr. Bret Frye and Frye dental group in honor of his first wife, Leslie, who died from breast cancer.

All money raised goes toward a fund at the Marietta Community Foundation, which pays for a vacation for someone fighting cancer.

"We give em that X on the calendar," Frye said. "This is the date I'm shooting for. This is the date that we will go on vacation as a family, so it's a woman who has cancer and her family to send them on vacation to make a memory."

"It's not for the sickest of the sick or the poorest of the poor, it's, do you have cancer and we take care of all expenses, vacation home, or to go to Disney, or something of that nature."

Frye says the Leslie Frye Foundation usually provides around four to five vacations a year for cancer patients and their families.
