Athens native wins SEC Championship
Joe Burrow is a native of Athens and the starting quarterback for the LSU Tigers and the front runner to win the Heisman trophy.
Burrow has led the tigers to a 12-0 record and Saturday they took on the Georgia Bulldogs in the SEC championship game.
Burrow’s parents attend Christ Community Wesleyan Church and the Athens community came out to watch the big game and cheer him on.
Burrow was a star athlete for the Athens Bulldogs , so many of these community members have been watching Joe for a long time and they are just proud to see how far he’s came.
Rusty Thomas is the organizer of the watch party and has known Joe and his family for many years.
“He’s been thrilled about the whole Athens community just supporting Joe and his quest," said Thomas, organizer.
Thomas describes Joe as a humble guy with a great work ethic.
“He’s one of those rare athletes that wants to achieve the most out of his abilities and he’s been able to do that."
The Athens community says they’re just happy to support one of their own.
“Someone that has come through not only this church but through the area and has some great success on a national stage," said Warner, senior pastor, Christ Community Wesleyan Church. I think has been a great thing for our community to be able to have somebody to cheer for that kind of represents us.”
Burrow is hoping to lead LSU to a National Championship title.
