Man in custody after barricade situation in Devola

DEVOLA, Ohio (WTAP) - UPDATE: 2/3/20 5 P.M.

A Marietta man is facing multiple charges after he barricaded himself inside his parent’s home Monday morning following a police pursuit, authorities said.

Nathaniel Becker, 40, was arrested after coming out of the home in the 300-block of Lawton Road shortly after noon.

The incident began about 9 a.m. when a Washington County sheriff’s detective attempted to stop a Jeep that he saw speed through the intersection at Davis Avenue and Muskingum Drive. The officer began pursuing the Jeep north on Muskingum Drive and pulled it over at Colegate Drive.

According to the sheriff’s office, Becker got out of his vehicle, wielded a knife and a screwdriver and began walking aggressively toward the officer’s cruiser. He then allegedly stopped in front of the cruiser and shouted for the deputy to shoot him.

The sheriff’s office said Becker then got back into his Jeep and headed north on State Route 60. After about a mile, he turned onto Maple Shade Drive. From there, the chase continued onto Alden Street and eventually to Lawton Road, where he abandoned the Jeep in a driveway in the 300 block and ran into the home through a garage door.

A sheriff’s office special-response team was immediately called to the area and authorities began negotiations with Becker to end the situation peacefully. He came out shortly after noon following several loud explosions in the vicinity of the home.

No injuries were reported.

Becker faces charges of aggravated menacing, failure to comply with the signal or order of a police officer and inducting panic.

He remains in the Washington County Jail awaiting a hearing Marietta Municipal Court.
