Belpre Schools show improvement

BELPRE, Ohio (WTAP) - Belpre Schools' superintendent had some good news about student achievement at Monday night's board of education meeting.

Superintendent Jeffrey Greenley told the board Belpre's overall grade in this year's Ohio Report Card improved from a "D" to a "C".

Belpre Elementary School did better: it improved from a "C" to a "B", and its literacy grade for kindergarden through third grade was a "B".

"There are six schools in the county out of 18 that have a B," Greenley said. "Belpre Elementary is one of them. And only 30% of the schools in Ohio have that distinction."

Meanwhile, Greenley would not comment on the future of High School Principal Samuel Pepper, who recently was in court on a misdemeanor domestic violence charge.

He did say Pepper is still working in the school system.

The board also observed a moment of silence for three educators who recently passed away, including long-time teacher and board member Rod Hineman.
