BELPRE, OH (WTAP)- Medal of Honor recipient Hershel “Woody” Williams stopped by Belpre Elementary School on Tuesday to talk to students about responsibility, patriotism and the importance of character.
Williams said he enjoys speaking to students because he hopes to have an influence, however small, on their lives and on the country’s future.
“They’re going to, one of these days, be in charge of this country, and somebody has to educate them a little bit about what has happened in the past, and what their responsibility is going to be in in the future,” he said.
“He is just a piece of America’s history, and we are so excited. We try to instill patriotism and character in our kids, and when they can see living character and can get feedback from that and talk with him, I just think it builds that respect for our country and the people who fought for it,” said Joy Edgell, principal of Belpre Elementary School.
Williams spoke to the students for 20 minutes before opening the floor to questions.
