Belpre school bus drivers say the rides into school went smoothly and the new high school principal, Sam Pepper, says the school year is off to a good start.
Pepper hopes Belpre High School’s staff can create an environment that encourages leadership.
On his first day, Pepper spoke to the students about some of his expectations.
“I spoke to the students this morning about focusing on three things, and that’s respect, responsibility, and leadership. So I hope to create an environment where we can empower leaders throughout the school year,” said Pepper.

School is back in session in Belpre Tuesday, and Wood County schools head back Thursday.
Belpre has new administration from the superintendent to the elementary principal, and they’re taking a fresh look at what kids are learning by looking at what skills children need to know both socially and educationally before they step out into the real world.
“So we want to try a lot of different strategies and lean into a lot of opportunities to give children exposure to technology, to different groups in the community, to having conversations that they may not be used to having,” said Belpre Elementary Principal Lauren Keeling.
Keeling says that she aims for students to think critically, but sometimes that can be a difficult skill to teach.
