Brown to Trump: Keep your promise on gun legislation

WASHINGTON, D.C.-(WTAP) Congressional Democrats are pressing President Donald Trump to demand passage of a bipartisan bill expanding background checks for gun purchases.

Democratic leaders in both the House and Senate said if the president doesn't do so, he is squandering an opportunity for meaningful action on gun violence.

Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown said the president told him he would immediately call for action, but Brown now believes he has changed his mind.

"Until McConnell, the Republican leader of the Senate, and Trump break their addiction to gun lobby campaign contributions, we're not going to see progress and action," Brown said Thursday, "and we've got to keep the pressure on."

Republican leader Mitch McConnell has repeatedly said he would not advance a gun regulation bill in the Senate unless the president makes a commitment he will sign it into law.
