Candy drive aims to sweeten holidays for troops overseas

PARKERSBURG, W.Va. (WTAP) - Halloween has come and gone, and Veteran’s Day is just around the corner.

With that in mind, two Mid-Ohio Valley businesses organized “Treats for Troops,” a daylong candy drive in which they gave kids $1 for every pound of candy they brought into their offices on Wednesday.

All of the candy collected at Frames Etc. on Division Street in south Parkersburg and Smith Orthodontics on Rosemar Circle in Parkersburg will be turned over to a company that specializes in donations to troops and then shipped overseas, organizers said.

Smith Orthodontics has held the drive in the past, and it has been so successful that Dr. Joanna Frame decided to get involved this year.

"Well, my dad's a vet, and I'm a huge military supporter, and that's why I got so excited last year when Dr. (Amy) Smith did it,” I've always been big military. I teach my children to support the military, and I thank every single one of them for all of their service."

Frame said the event is simple way to show a little love to those who serve and protect the United States overseas.
